Nothing like reminiscing about childhood! Especially on a crazy go-go-go day! Life was a piece of cake back then!!! When I sit back and giggle about all those past memories, my Grandmothers dedication and sense of humor about EVERYTHING comes to my mind. She was the one person in my life that was always there for me. It didn't matter how busy she was, she would drop everything to be their, show her support and make me laugh. Even if I was in full on crybaby mode. All I had to do was ask.
My Mother is one of 5 children. My Mother being one of the youngest & the fact that my Grandparents were career oriented folks before deciding to start a family, made my Grandparents the "older parents". So as you can imagine, by the time I graced the world with my presence, my Grandmother was the age of most peoples Great Grandparents.
Regardless of how young her soul may be, or how many Jello Shots she asks me to make for holidays. Yes, that photo above, 100% Grandmas Idea!!!!! Whenever I see memes about 100+ year olds and wine being their fountain of youth, I always think, that’s going to be my Grandma!!! The reality is, my Grandmother may be a blast to chill with, but she is well into her 90's & needs help with everyday life.
My Grandfather passed away 28 years ago . It was that moment that my Mother & her siblings promised my Grandmother that they would do everything in their power to keep her out of a nursing home when the time came. When my Grandmother started needing a walker to get around and could no longer drive herself to places like the market, one of my Uncles moved into Grandmas house to make sure the life of every family party was well taken care of.
Now that I have a little girl of my own, I want to make sure she has all the same memories I have of my Grandma! Since my daughters Great Grandma in her 90’s, we need to make sure we spend as much time as possible with her and make as many memories as possible FAST. The best way to do that is to make Caregiving FUN for kids! Something they look forward to.
Listed below are a few tips on how to get your kid more involved in caregiving!
1.Involve Your Children In Shopping
It’s no surprise that any elderly person needs assistance with shopping. Grandma is in a walker, so the days of her strolling the aisles of Walmart are in the past. To take the strain off of the main caregiver in your family, take your child shopping with you to shop for those necessities such as
Most children LOVE shopping!!! Your child will most likely get super excited that they helped out and want to drop off all the goodies you scooped and show off the items themselves. Think of it as a version of “show & tell” caregiving edition;-)

2. Get Crafty!
Everyone loves receiving hand made gifts!!! All that thought and love that goes into creating that special something! Little kids LOVE to get crafty!
No time to get crafty? Toss a few crafts from school into those shopping bags next time you’re dropping off those caregiver goodies and Great Grandma will feel just as special!.
One of our favorite ways to get crafty with caregiving is to dot paint wrapping paper and wrap up those caregiving items like that box of TENA® Overnight Underwear. My daughter thinks of it as though she is playing Santa! Santa brings items like toothbrushes, socks and underwear so she can bring Great Grandma those same items wrapped up all year long!
My daughter just dots away using wine corks (something her Great Grandma would approve of) and sometimes makes hand prints. Then we wrap the goodies up and deliver!
3. Let’s Be PenPals
Remember when the Internet wasn’t a big deal and writing letters was an actual thing? I can’t tell you the last time I took the time to hand write ANYTHING! I was probably my daughters age! Most elderly folks come from era when the only way of communication was through letters. I know my Grandmother has a box filled with letters she has treasured over the years!
Even if the loved one you help take care for lives a few miles away, have your kids hand write letters. Honestly, in this day in age, it will most likely be the only time they hand write ANYTHING other than homework. Your elderly loved one will be happy to receive a letter! A blast from the past for them! And your child will have that memory forever of hand writing letters to Great Grandma! Plus, it will give both your child and the elderly loved one something to look forward to. It’s fun receiving ANYTHING besides bills in the mail! Who knows when the next letter will arrive!
4. Snack Time
Regardless if you’re 5 or 95, we all have one thing in common. Our love of food! Funny thing is kids & old folks seem to have the same taste buds. Juice, cereal, fruit cups, candy!
Make the effort to get your kiddo to plan a snack date with your elderly loved one! Plan easy snacks your child can help prepare, so the main caregiver doesn’t need to be involved. Let the caregiver kick back while your child takes a turn running the show. They can snack on all of their mutual favorites while your kiddo gets a glimpse into the past from Great Grandma’s Story telling! Those are definitely memories that will last a lifetime.
