Ahhhh Western New York! The home of freezing cold, lake effect snowy winters! Originally from the south,I literally freeze to death year round!!! I left Florida 6-7 years ago and I’m still not used to the cold weather here in NY. And to make things worse, I live in an older home with some areas that are a tab bit colder regardless of the season.
My kitchen has THREE doors that lead outdoors & in the winter it’s especially frustrating because I end up walking around my house in layers because I will be shivering in my kitchen & then sweating in my living room! I have no clue which door or maybe even window causes this cold issue!
Unfortunatly getting an energy audit through a contractor to figure out this cold spot issue is just not in our budget this year. I was convinced I would just have to deal with guessing where these cold spots were originating from, but then I stumbled upon a very simple way to find out if your house is energy-efficient: BlindSpotz.
What are BlindSpotz?
BlindSpotz are easy-to-use, removable home sensors to detect, diagnose and fix cold spots. You simply stick them on your wall next to any spot you feel the cold maybe seeping in from such as windows & doors and after 48 hours you’ll be able to tell the temperature in that specific area. Finding out the temperature will allow you to see if that specific area of the house needs to be more insulated, or if anything else can be done to prevent heat from escaping.
Here’s how BlindSpotz work
Each package of BlindSpotz comes with 8 sensors. On a colder day when the temperatures are below 32 degrees outside, you just simply peel the sensor and stick them in certain areas of the house that feel colder to you than others. For example, near windows and door frames, the basement entrance, near closets, cabinets, the attic and the garage. Once you stick the sensor in the cold spot, use your finger to rub the surface of the sticker until it is gray. This will activate the sensor. Once it’s gray, leave it in place for 48 hours.
Once 48 hours has passed, check the sensors to see what the temperature in that cold spot reads. Take a photo of any sensors measuring 50 or 55 degrees and email those photos to firstname.lastname@example.org. You will then receive various solutions to help keep that area warmer, as well as coupons that can be used at participating retailers and/or contractors.
